Historical information and application
The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind is a German self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery vehicle, based on the Panzer IV Ausf.G tank chassis. It was developed in response to the growing threat posed by Allied aircraft on the World War II fronts. The gun was fitted with a rotating, open turret armed with four 2 cm Flakvierling 38 cannons, which provided a high rate of fire. Vehicles equipped with Zimmerit coating were mainly used by the Wehrmacht in 1944–1945, particularly on the Eastern and Western Fronts, where they protected armored columns and infantry against air attacks.
