Tamiya 31316 Japanese Light Cruiser Kuma 1/700

Tamiya 31316 Japanese Light Cruiser Kuma 1/700 is a high-quality plastic model kit representing the Japanese Imperial Navy's light cruiser, the renowned Kuma. The model is made in a precise 1:700 scale, allowing for a faithful recreation of the authentic warship, which was a key element of Japan’s fleet in the early 20th century.

Kuma, whose keel was laid in 1918, was launched in July 1919 and entered service in August 1920. The ship was heavily used from the interwar period through World War II and remained in use until it was sunk in 1944. The real cruiser measured 130 meters in length, 15.9 meters in width, and had a full displacement of 7,100 tons. Kuma achieved an impressive top speed of 36 knots, making her one of the fastest in her class. Main armament consisted of seven single 140 mm guns, supplemented by two 80 mm guns and four twin 533 mm torpedo launchers. The vessel saw extensive operations in the Pacific, including the Philippines area and supporting Japanese invasions in Southeast Asia.

The Tamiya 31316 plastic model is a carefully designed kit made from durable plastic, supplied as sprues that accurately reflect the armament, superstructures, and deck details of the historical Kuma ship. The product does not include glue or paints – these are sold separately. The model allows you to assemble your own replica of the famed cruiser, and the quality of the parts ensures that even the most advanced modelers will appreciate the accurate proportions and intricate details. The kit does not include photo-etched or resin parts, making it relatively accessible for intermediate maritime modeling enthusiasts as well.

1/700

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
