The R35, designed in the mid-1930s, was intended to support infantry in offensives. It featured solid armor for effective protection against small arms, but initially had limited anti-tank capabilities due to its short-barreled 37 mm gun. The FCM turret version improved both functionality and ergonomics. Over 1,600 units were produced between 1936 and 1940 and participated in the 1940 French campaign. The tank was exported to Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Turkey. After France's defeat, R35s were also used by the German army, where they were converted into tank destroyers, among other variants.
