Fujimi 433288 Imperial Japanese Navy Light Cruiser Sakawa 1/700

Fujimi 433288 Imperial Japanese Navy Light Cruiser Sakawa is a high-quality plastic model kit that faithfully reproduces a Japanese Navy light cruiser from World War II. This 1/700 scale model was created for demanding modelers seeking realism, especially those interested in the Japanese fleet from the final years of the war.

  • Country of use: Japan
  • Historical period: World War II and post-war atomic tests (1944-1946)
  • Material: plastic (high-quality polystyrene), with transparent and metallic parts
  • Category: plastic model kit
  • Additional elements: decals with ship markings, flags, and emblems, two Zero-type seaplanes
  • Number of parts: 207
  • Does not include: glue, paints

Historical description: Sakawa was the fourth and last cruiser of the Agano class, designed as the flagship for destroyer flotillas. Laid down at the Sasebo Arsenal, it was completed just before the end of World War II—in November 1944. Its modern design distinguished it from earlier Japanese light cruisers—Sakawa featured a new type of armament: three twin 15 cm guns, two twin 8 cm anti-aircraft guns, and numerous 25 mm gun positions. Due to the weakening of the Japanese fleet, it did not have the opportunity to play a significant combat role. After Japan's surrender, it was used as a repatriation transport, and in 1946, it was used during atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, where it sank.

Model features: The replica reproduces the ship's modern appearance with details such as separate metallic and transparent parts (bridge glazing, reflectors), three-dimensional cranes, gun turrets with separate barrels and shields, and realistic deck details with a distinct pattern of linoleum and iron strips. Special parts allow for recreating differences characteristic of Sakawa compared to sister ships. The set includes decals for marking the ship, flags, and aircraft, including Hinomaru symbols and chrysanthemum emblems.

Additionally, the model enables precise presentation of electronic equipment (21, 22, and 13 radars), full anti-aircraft armament (single and triple 25 mm Type 96), as well as characteristic elements of the bridge and gun turrets produced with slide-mold technology.

Recommendation: The model is recommended for intermediate and advanced modelers (difficulty level 3/5) who expect a high level of detail and a rich historical background. It is an excellent choice for naval collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese naval history.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
