Historical description of the MC.200 Saetta

Macchi MC.200 Saetta ("Lightning" in Polish) was designed by Mario Castoldi as a modern response to the needs of the Italian Air Force in the second half of the 1930s. It was the first production Italian monoplane fighter with an all-metal construction, powered by a Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with 840 HP. The MC.200 Saetta was distinguished by its solid build and good maneuverability. The aircraft entered service in 1939 and served until the end of the war on the main theaters of operations involving the Regia Aeronautica – in the African campaign, battles over the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and on the Eastern Front (Russia).
