Historical Description

SMS Szent István was one of four Tegetthoff-class dreadnoughts—battleships built for Austria-Hungary before World War I. She served in the Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine (Imperial and Royal Navy of Austria-Hungary) and was named after the first king of Hungary—Saint Stephen. The ship was launched in 1914 and entered service in 1915. SMS Szent István took part in patrols and operations in the Adriatic during World War I. She became famous for her tragic sinking on June 10, 1918, after being attacked by Italian torpedo boats during an attempt to break the Otranto naval blockade. This is one of the most well-known naval events of the Great War, which continues to be widely described in historical literature to this day.
