ICM 48403 BQM-34A (Q-2C) Firebee US Drone 1/48 is a detailed plastic model kit depicting the American BQM-34A Firebee unmanned aerial vehicle in 1/48 scale. This model faithfully reproduces the construction of the popular drone, which played a significant role in the training of United States Air Force military personnel during the Cold War.

  • Scale: 1/48
  • Country of use: USA
  • Period of use: Cold War (from the 1950s, widely used even in the 1970s)
  • Category: Plastic model kit
  • Material: High-quality plastic (the kit does not include metal barrels or resin parts; this is a base set)

Historical description:
The BQM-34A Firebee was developed by Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical as a radio-controlled target drone for military flight crew training. Its role was to simulate aerial attacks for the training of anti-aircraft weapon operators and pilots. The drone, controlled by radio, descended by parachute to the ground after mission completion or being shot down and could be reused. The Firebee became a pioneering design in the field of autonomous range targets, and the widespread use of these drones influenced the development of remotely operated military systems in the USA.
The BQM-34A variant was mainly used by the USAF, and drone carriers, such as adapted DB-26 aircraft, could carry the drones on external wing pylons.

The ICM 48403 model kit includes a precisely cast drone fuselage, wing elements and fuselage details, as well as clear assembly instructions. Glue, paints, and decals other than basic markings are not included.

Assembly difficulty level: 2/5 – The model is recommended for both beginners and intermediate modelers who wish to expand their collection with uncommon equipment used in real combat training.

Recommendation:
The BQM-34A Firebee model is an excellent choice for military aviation enthusiasts and those interested in the history of unmanned technologies. It allows you to build a kit rarely found in modeling, making a great addition to dioramas or collections of Cold War-era machines. Well-executed details and well-fitting parts allow for a realistic final result.

Scale
1/48

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
