The Lockheed YF-23 Black Widow II was one of two prototype fighters developed under the American Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program in the late 1980s by Lockheed (in cooperation with Northrop and Boeing). It was intended as the successor to the F-15 Eagle, serving as the air superiority fighter for the US Air Force. The YF-23 featured an innovative stealth design, extremely low radar detectability, and the capability to sustain supersonic speeds without afterburners. Ultimately, it was outperformed by Lockheed Martin's YF-22 (later the F-22 Raptor) in competition, but the YF-23 remains one of the most recognizable aircraft designs of the Cold War and the 1990s. The prototypes were tested in 1990–1991.
