The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien was one of the most important and recognizable Japanese fighters of World War II. Designed by Kawasaki, it was distinguished by a unique—for Japan—liquid-cooled inline engine. The aircraft made its combat debut in April 1942 during the Doolittle Raid, and it was used most intensively from 1943 in the Pacific theater: over New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and during the defense of the Japanese Islands. By the end of the war, over 3,000 examples of this fighter in various variants had been built, and its further development was the Kawasaki Ki-100, based on the Ki-61-II Kai fuselage and powered by the Mitsubishi Ha-112-II radial engine.
