Airfix 1356 M36B1 GMC (U.S.Army) 1/35 – Plastic Model Kit

The Airfix 1356 M36B1 GMC (U.S.Army) in 1/35 scale is a faithfully replicated model of the American tank destroyer M36B1 Jackson, also known as the “Slugger.” Based on the robust M4A3 Sherman chassis, the model represents one of the most effective armored vehicles used by American units during the late phase of World War II and in postwar conflicts.

M36B1 GMC was introduced into combat in the second half of 1944 and had a significant impact on the course of battles, particularly during the German offensive in the Ardennes. Equipped with a modern, 90 mm M3 anti-tank gun, it posed a real threat even to the best-armored German tanks—Tigers and Panthers. It was the only American tank destroyer capable of effectively engaging these vehicles without support from artillery or air force, and its production reached nearly 1,400 units in just over a year.

After World War II ended, M36 vehicles served in many armies worldwide—they were used in Korea, subcontinental conflicts in India, and also in the Balkans.

  • Scale: 1/35
  • Country of use: United States (USA), allied and postwar countries (South Korea, India, Yugoslavia)
  • Historical period: World War II, Korean War, postwar era
  • Material: High quality plastic
  • Category: Plastic model kit
  • Details: Includes precisely reproduced hull, turret, and armament parts. Can be complemented with aftermarket accessories (e.g., metal barrels, photo-etched parts—not included in the standard set)
  • Difficulty level: 3/5 – model recommended for intermediate modelers

I especially recommend the Airfix 1356 M36B1 GMC to enthusiasts of historical modeling, armored warfare aficionados, and diorama builders of World War II scenes. The model stands out for its detailed accuracy and clear instructions, enabling a realistic depiction of both the combat version from the Ardennes and later variants used, for example, in Korea.

Excellent for collections of armored vehicles from World War II, for battle dioramas, or as a base for modifications and custom arrangements. It works equally well as a first large tank in a collection or as a project for an experienced modeler seeking a high-quality replica of the American “Slugger.”

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
