History and Use of the Vought SB2U Vindicator Aircraft

The SB2U Vindicator was a carrier-based bomber aircraft developed by the United States in the mid-1930s. It became the first US Navy dive bomber with an all-metal construction. Vindicators were introduced into service just before World War II and were used by bomber squadrons stationed on aircraft carriers like the USS “Saratoga” and USS “Lexington”, as well as at land bases such as NAS North Island or Bourne Field in the Virgin Islands. They participated in the Battle of Midway, as well as numerous training and patrol missions during World War II.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
