History of the British Phantom II FG.1

The McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 was an adaptation of the iconic American F-4 Phantom II fighter, used by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The British FG.1 version was modified for the requirements of Ark Royal and Eagle class aircraft carriers and equipped with, among other things, folding wings and British-made Rolls-Royce Spey engines. In Royal Navy service, the fighter performed both interceptor and strike roles, and it was later operated by the RAF as an air defense aircraft.

The FG.1 entered operational service in the second half of the 1960s, becoming especially known for its role in defensive patrols over the northeastern Atlantic during the Cold War. It was used primarily by the 892 Naval Air Squadron and 43 and 111 Squadrons of the RAF until the mid-1980s, when it was replaced by the Tornado F.3.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
