History and use of the Avro de Havilland Vampire F.20

The De Havilland Vampire F.20 is one of the most important post-war fighter aircraft, which had its first flights at the end of World War II. The Vampire fighter, used mainly by Great Britain, Commonwealth countries, and others, stood out for its unique fuselage and tail design and was one of the world’s first widely used jet aircraft. This type of aircraft was operated from the end of World War II, through the Cold War period, until the early 1960s in various air forces, e.g. the RAF, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and India. The Vampire F.20 was mainly involved in patrol and training operations, but it also frequently appeared at air shows and in combat missions in various Cold War conflict zones.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
