The first version, known as Ferdinand, was distinguished by its heavy armor and 88 mm Pak 43/2 gun, but was also known for lacking a machine gun, making it vulnerable to infantry attacks. After the battle, many Ferdinand vehicles were upgraded—the modified version entered service as the Elefant. These vehicles served on the Eastern Front from 1943, and later in combat in Italy and subsequent wartime operations.
