ICM 72061 I-15 Chato, Spanish Air Force Fighter-Biplane (1/72)

ICM 72061 I-15 Chato is an excellent plastic model kit in the popular 1/72 scale, faithfully representing the legendary Spanish biplane fighter Polikarpov I-15, which became famous during the Spanish Civil War. This model is dedicated to enthusiasts of historic aviation, especially those interested in conflicts of the 1930s and Spanish military aviation.

The original Polikarpov I-15 “Chato” was widely used by the Spanish Air Force between 1936 and 1939, during the Civil War. Its characteristic silhouette with “gull” wings and open cockpit distinguished it from other aircraft of that era. The plane was also exported to other countries and saw limited combat in World War II, but its greatest significance was during the conflict in Spain, where it was a key aircraft in Republican squadrons, effectively competing with the Italian Fiats CR.32 and German Heinkels.

  • Scale: 1/72 — an ideal model for collections of aircraft models in this popular scale.
  • Country of use: Spain (Spanish Air Force, Ejército del Aire), Spanish Civil War period.
  • Years of use: 1936–1939, historical period: Spanish Civil War, pre-war era.
  • Material: high-quality plastic, allowing for easy fit of parts and a high level of detail.
  • Category: plastic model kit, intended for aircraft modelers.
  • Extras: the kit does not include glue or paints—these finishing materials must be purchased separately, allowing for a wide range of individual customization.

The ICM model is characterized by very good detail reproduction, realistic panel lines, and precise part fitting. It is an extremely attractive choice for both beginner and intermediate modelers. The small scale means that assembly is not overly difficult and does not require extensive experience. The project provides an opportunity to learn about classic biplane construction and techniques for painting historic aircraft.

We highly recommend this product to all aviation and military history enthusiasts, as well as to collectors of aircraft from the interwar period and those interested in the Spanish Civil War. Assembly difficulty level: 2/5 — suitable for beginners as well as those with some modeling experience.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
