Hansa Kogge – History of the Vessel

The Hansa Kogge is one of the most famous sailing ships used in the waters of the Baltic and North Seas in the 14th and 15th centuries, mainly by cities belonging to the Hanseatic League (Hansa). These ships were primarily used in Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. Their period of greatest prosperity was during the Middle Ages – from the late 13th to the early 15th century. Kogges played a key role in the development of sea trade and formed the basis of the economic power of Hanseatic cities.

A typical kogge was used for transporting goods, but it also served as a warship for the protection of Hanseatic convoys. The most famous use of these vessels took place during the Hanseatic League’s battles with pirates and in defensive operations against rival leagues and states. The reconstructed original kogge from Bremen (Kogge von Bremen) is today one of the best-researched sailing ships of this type.
