The Karl-Gerät (also known as “Karl-Mörser”) was developed by Rheinmetall just before World War II for the German army (Wehrmacht). The inspiration was the need to destroy the formidable French fortifications of the Maginot Line, although this task was never realized; the 600 mm mortars were first used operationally during the German invasion of the USSR, including the siege of Sevastopol in 1942 (units “Odin” and “Thor”).

Karl-Gerät also played a significant role during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, where the “Ziu” specimen shelled insurgent positions in Warsaw’s Wola district. The mortar’s destructive power was enormous — 600 mm shells caused devastating destruction to buildings, as captured in numerous historical photographs.
