Historical background – wz. 36 anti-aircraft gun

The wz. 36 anti-aircraft gun was one of the most important elements of Poland’s anti-aircraft defense just before the outbreak of World War II. It was the domestic version of the famous Swedish Bofors 40 mm gun, manufactured under license by the State Rifle Factory and the Polish-American Mechanics Association (SMPA). Thanks to its excellent performance, it effectively protected Polish units against dive bomber raids and engaged ground targets. It proved especially valuable during the September Campaign in the defense of Warsaw, Lviv, and the Modlin Fortress. Its mobility and quick setup were highly valued by rapid response units and artillery support.
