After experiences in the Spanish Civil War, German designers decided to develop a machine capable of direct ground support and breaking through fortifications. Several prototypes were built as part of the program, the third of which, the Fw 189V-6 (Fw 189C), stood out with its armored two-seater cockpit and powerful armament – two 20 mm MG-FF cannons and four MG17 (7.92 mm) machine guns, plus a defensive MG81.
