The Sd.Kfz. 164 Nashorn ("Rhinoceros") was designed as a quick response to the growing threat from Soviet T-34 and heavy KV tanks. Based on the Panzer III/IV chassis, it was equipped with the legendary 88 mm PaK 43 gun – famous for penetrating the armor of most Allied tanks. The Nashorn served mainly on the Eastern Front, making its debut at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, but was also used on the Western European and Italian fronts. In total, about 473 units were produced.
