Historical Information about the FM-2 Wildcat

The Grumman FM-2 Wildcat is an American single-seat carrier-based fighter that played a crucial role in the Pacific during World War II. Mass-produced between 1943 and 1945 by General Motors for the US Navy and Royal Navy, it was perfectly suited for operations from escort carriers. Its distinctive armament arrangement with four 12.7 mm caliber machine guns made it a formidable adversary for both Japanese fighters and bombers. The FM-2 Wildcat participated in, among others, the Battle of Leyte Gulf and numerous escort operations that were key to maintaining Allied control at sea.
