The Mistel 1 was used on the Western Front by specialized Luftwaffe units to attack Allied ships off the coast of France in the summer of 1944 and during attempts to halt the Red Army's offensive in the east in the spring of 1945. The system was based on combining two aircraft – the lower, pilotless Ju 88A-4 armed with the warhead, and the upper, piloted Bf 109F-4 which controlled the entire assembly. Upon approaching the target, the pilot detached the upper aircraft and returned to base, while the Ju 88 was directed at the target as a self-guided bomb.
