The He 111H-8 was used by the Luftwaffe, mainly in the years 1940-1941, as a response to the new British defense strategy – barrage balloons with cables over large cities. German engineers equipped the bombers with a massive steel structure with blades mounted at the front of the aircraft, the so-called Paravane, allowing the cables of the balloons to be cut. These modifications made the aircraft more difficult to fly and more susceptible to damage, but provided a strategic advantage during air raids. The He 111H-8 planes were mainly used by the IV./KG27 "Boelcke" and 9./KG55 "Greif" units in France in 1941.
