The Polikarpov R-1 model, designed by Nikolai Polikarpov, was the first mass-produced Soviet reconnaissance aircraft and light bomber. Developed in 1928 and structurally based on the British DH.9A, more than 3,000 units were built, playing a key role in the development of Soviet reconnaissance aviation. It served during the Soviet-Chinese conflict over the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER) in 1929, and also took part in combat missions over Moscow, Ukraine, and Siberia.
