The 8 cm s.Gr.W.34 (Schwerer Granatwerfer 34) mortar was produced from 1934 to 1945 and served as the primary support weapon for Wehrmacht infantry battalions. It was used on all World War II fronts: from France and the USSR to North Africa. Renowned for its high rate of fire, ease of use, and reliability under tough combat conditions, it provided support in both offensive and defensive operations. Its ability to be disassembled into three parts and relatively low weight (about 60 kg) made it easy for the crew to transport.

Ammunition for the s.Gr.W.34 mortar included a wide range of shells: high-explosive, smoke, illumination, and so-called “bouncing” rounds. Proper adjustment of the barrel elevation and powder charge allowed for effective range and firepower regulation, and a trained crew could fire up to 25 rounds per minute.
