The AMX-50B represented the culmination of French tank design philosophy after World War II, following the trend of developing super-heavy and heavily armed tanks. After the end of the occupation in 1944, France sought a vehicle to rival the Soviet IS-3 and the German Tiger II, which led to an extended series of prototypes (1951–1958). The AMX-50B stood out with its low-profile cast hull, advanced oscillating turret, and powerful 120 mm gun. Despite its ambitious solutions and efforts to improve performance, the high mass and technical complexity meant none of the prototypes entered serial production.
