Historical background of the original

The AMX-50B represented the culmination of French tank design philosophy after World War II, following the trend of developing super-heavy and heavily armed tanks. After the end of the occupation in 1944, France sought a vehicle to rival the Soviet IS-3 and the German Tiger II, which led to an extended series of prototypes (1951–1958). The AMX-50B stood out with its low-profile cast hull, advanced oscillating turret, and powerful 120 mm gun. Despite its ambitious solutions and efforts to improve performance, the high mass and technical complexity meant none of the prototypes entered serial production. Nevertheless, the tank played a significant role as a testbed for later French armored designs, and its components were later used in the AMX-30 and the AMX-50 Foch tank destroyer.

Model details and applications

Amusing Hobby has carefully reproduced the details – the model features a realistic hull, torsion bar suspension structure, and the characteristic oscillating turret with a large cannon. The kit does not include photo-etched or metal parts, but the plastic components are of very high quality and precisely fit together. This is an ideal proposal both for straight-out-of-the-box builds and for advanced detailing. Recommended for intermediate to advanced modelers, especially those passionate about post–World War II armored vehicle history.

• Build difficulty level: 3/5
• Model especially recommended for collectors of unique prototypes and dioramas featuring Cold War armored forces.
