Historical description of Moskvitch-401-420

The Moskvitch 401-420 was produced by the Soviet Moskvitch factory from 1954 to 1956. This car was an improved version of the earlier 400-420 model (produced since 1947), modernized in terms of its engine and equipment. The Moskvitch 401 was fitted with a 1074 cm³ engine with increased power up to 26 HP, enabling speeds of up to 90 km/h. The structural improvements also included a more robust starter, modernized bearings, an improved braking system, and a new dynamo.

These cars were widely used in the Soviet Union and exported to Eastern Bloc countries such as East Germany, as well as to Norway. Interestingly, Moskvitches exported to Scandinavia were often traded in exchange for fish catches, demonstrating the significance of the USSR automotive industry in postwar Europe. Production ended in 1956, and the model was succeeded by the more modern Moskvitch 402.
